ACC Helps Haiti

Students and faculty of Aurora Central are doing their part to help the members of Haiti and the country as a whole. A dress down day sponsored by the National Honor Society took place on Friday, January, 22. Students are doing their part not just by raising money but by raising awareness as well. Students have been adding red to their uniform in different ways to show their support in Haitian relief. Girls are putting red bows and hairclips in their hair and painting their nails red. Guys and girls are wearing red socks to school and red t-shirts to after school practices.

Mrs. Terry Banas, freshman and junior theology teacher, is spreading her support to her students and the school as a whole. Mrs. Banas has been a contributor to the Food For The Poor Organization for quite some time now and is using the disaster in Haiti as a way to spread her support to those around her. Food For The Poor is the largest international relief agency in the United States; the smallest amount of money donated to Food For The Poor helps in some way. For just $12 you can feed a family for a month while $20 provides 100 lbs of rice and beans and $36 feeds a child for a year. In Mrs. Banas’ room, she has a container for donations to help Haiti. “I like Food For The Poor because it teaches people to become participants and learn skills that will help the donators and the poor.” said Banas. Mrs. Banas has always said that we need to help people prosper, not just give them things and that’s what Food For The Poor does. “We need to help them in the long run, not just throw money at them and hope it works out. We need to help them learn life and business skills so they can stand on their own two feet.”

We don’t all need to donate millions of dollars to show our support to the country of Haiti. All of us can make a difference just by donating $1. Everyone needs to remember that one day we could be the ones in need and we’ll want people to help us, so we need to act now and help in any way we can.
