Chargers Stumble in the Fourth Quarter

Everyone knows about the cross-town rivalry between the Aurora Central Catholic Chargers and the Marmion Cadets. The 68th meeting between these two teams was held at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates as part of the 13th annual High School Hoops Showdown. Drawing perhaps the largest crowd of any of the three games that night, the atmosphere was electrified as these two basketball powers faced off. The Chargers had maintained a comfortable lead for most the game until there was 5 minutes and 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter where the Chargers were outscored 24-4. At this point, the Chargers enjoyed a 43-30 advantage. Then with 4 minutes and 8 seconds to go, point guard Steven Hollon fouled out on a questionable call which many believe was the demise of the Chargers. Without Central’s star point guard, Marmion dialed up their full-court pressure to contest every pass the Chargers made. The Cadet’s Eddy Grahovec chipped in two three-pointers while Mark Peters added 11 in the fourth quarter. Tyler Hlavac’s pair of free throws finally iced the Charger’s heart breaking 54-47 defeat. Joey Guth led the Chargers with 17 points and Mark Peters led the Cadets with 23 points. ACC falls back to 10-8 on the season and will hopefully have a chance for redemption in regionals. Central will face another rival next Friday when they take on the Aurora Christian Eagles at home in what should be another intense matchup.
